Writing Assignment

Introductory Essay

One of the most frustrating academic experiences that many of us have probably faced is receiving a writing assignment and feeling as if we do not know enough about the given topic. This assignment will not likely evoke such a feeling since the topic is you!  Your essay should be a thoroughly describe you.  Although there are no limits as to what you may include about yourself, I strongly suggest that you include the following:

  1. What are your plans for yourself after high school? Why?

  1. How do you feel about school?  This should address what you like and don’t like about it and how you think that it might be improved.

  1. Describe significant social and academic experiences from as early as you can remember to the present.

  1. What subjects do you enjoy most and least? Why?

  1. What do you like and dislike most about school overall? Why?

  1. What do you like and dislike most about English? Why?

  1. Describe how you see yourself and how you think others see you.

  1. How do you believe that your teachers can best help you?

  1. How do you think you learn best?

  1. What do you like and dislike most about yourself? Why?

  1. What do you value most in life?

This is one of the few times that you will be allowed to write in first person.  Some reminders:

1) Your audience is me, your teacher, so you should use formal language.

2) Your primary purposes for writing are to help me better get to know you and to help me assess your current writing skills.

4) Your first draft must be handwritten.

5) You may or may not be required to make revisions and submit a second draft.

6) Details and explanations are essential for a fully developed essay!!!
